What is IoT?

Block-chain; Machine Learning; Cloud computing; Big data; Application development (web, mobile or desktop); Device programming; and electronic communication - these are the few from the well of the modern era of existence.

Internet of Things, popularly known by its acronym - IoT.

Let's first talk about the two keywords here; the Thing - it can be anything that contributes with some data to the network; the things can be sensors, TVs, mobile phones and different instruments depending upon the application. The other term, the Internet - the most popular example of WAN (Wide Area Network) and also the self-defined term over decades.

So in a layman term, IoT is a network of physical objects, called things, where each of these objects can communicate with each other in order to contribute the required and the finest information, which is further processed and analyzed.

The above definition also contributes to the purpose and importance of IoT as marked by the father of IoT -Kevin Ashton. The idea to connect the environment to the internet and the people, rather than people manually connecting the environment to the internet. I know this is now making you perplexed, check this entire article by Kevin Ashton here.

But this idea has aroused great concern in the industry, as mentioned in the book The Internet of Risky Things by Sean Smith, "In the IoT, we are layering computation on top of everything -and then interconnecting it."

The IoT stack comprises of five major blocks: Device Hardware; Device Software; Communication; Cloud and Application. Each of this is a deep ocean so, just grab the oxygen cylinder and jump.
